Manu Chao is Coming!

Grant it, the show is not until May. But I just got my tickets and I can’t wait. A fellow co-worker of mine introduced me to Mano Chao a few years ago. The first album I got my hands on was Clandestino. Then I got my hands on the live album Radio Bemba Sound System, and was really excited. The show sounded amazing and I couldn’t wait to see him live.

I found his site, but it looked like it hadn’t been updated in a long while. There were no show dates, or any recent news. I wrote it off to the fact that he wasn’t performing any more. I was disappointed but at least I had discovered him and could listen to his music whenever I needed to.

About a year ago a friend of mine, who I introduced Manu Chao to, called to tell me that he was playing in Berkley. Unfortunately it was a Friday night show and there was no way that we could get out of work and be there on time for the show, especially since we both live in Portland.

A few weeks ago as I was driving around somewhere I heard his name on the radio. It was an ad for The Sasquatch Music Festival in The Gorge. Dam it, I thought to myself, there is no way I am going to the Gorge again, especially when he wont be playing most of the time. Last time I was at the Gorge, it was to see Jack Johnson. The show was great, but the venue wasn’t all that great.

I then secretly hoped that he would be playing at least in Seattle. As luck would have it he is playing here May 28th at the Roseland. I am so excited I can’t wait. If you are going to be in Portland on May 28th, I would recommend getting tickets to go see him.

Great Son in the NW

After spending the whole day on Saturday moving into my new apartment, I decided to go and meet some of my friends at The Goodfoot. When I got there, the band was in between songs and there was a short line as the bouncer checked IDs. While on that line I heard my new landlady scream something about “the blah blah neighborhood”. “Oh boy, this is going to be a fun evening,” I thought to myself. As I was completing that thought, the band started their next song. Oh my god they were awesome. I couldn’t help but smile and wish that the line would move faster. I needed to get in there and dance.

CaƱa Son , whose bandleader is also the chef at Pambiche , is a band that plays traditional Cuban son. Their website touts them as the “The Hottest Cuban band in the NW.” and I would definitely agree. The music was amazing. The place was full of people dancing and having a great time. They have a couple of shows coming up. I would recommend checking their website and catch one of their shows. You wont regret it. Trust me.
